Thinking about jumping on one these for sale to tinker with but keep reading about how the cpu/case fans
have proprietary connections on the mobo. Not good as I wanted to install a new cpu cooler, can you Dell
gurus out there confirm this?

You can just use the plug from the stock fans to make adapters, if you're willing to sacrifice the original fans.

Personally I'd put a note with the original fans, if I stored them, with the pinout in case I wanted to re-use them later.

Similar problem with things like the early Dell Poweredge desktops (like my 830) with a single very loud funky PWM fan cooling the whole system.

*Too* *many* *things*!
