Hi all

Could this work as a pure MS DOS machine? I have a bunch of spare parts which would only need a PSU and case but it's completely period incorrect.

2.2ghz Pentium 4
256MB RAM
Aopen motherboard
Geforce FX 5200
Sound Blaster Augidy

would it work or would it just be so incompatible and bad? I've never in my life had a proper DOS machine and would like to give it a go. Plus my Windows 98 SE box refuses to do SB 16 emulation so this would allow me to get sound in DOS games. Also, would the CPU be too fast? I know some games go too fast if the clock speed is too fast so 2.2ghz on a old DOS game would be stupid??

If your mobo lets you disable cache, maybe you can do something with this.
However this sound card won't help you much with DOS stuff.
If your chipset supports it, you may be able to get somewhere with a YMF7x4 or a ESS maestro 1.

Try it. Seems like it should work, you will need to load a dos TSR for your Sound Blaster Audigy. Some games will have speed issues but many will not. You should poke around in the bios and see what options you have to slow it down, fsb settings, disable cache, etc. On the plus side, some games line Quake and Duke3D you shoulc have the horsepower to run at high resolutions.

Check out DOSBox Distro:

a lightweight Linux distro (tinycore) which boots off a usb flash drive and goes straight to DOSBox.

You can use ACPI tricks to slow down DOS as well. YMMV.
