I know big decision here, but my retro setup is on a fold up table with a surface that makes the mouse
"twitchy". A trip to Walmart showed various brands steelseries, corair, etc. for least 12 bucks. Any
recommendations here that might be cheaper?

Fine patterned surfaces will do anything fine. I'm using piece of cut cardboard from tissue box as mouse mat over my anti-static mat at work.

I've only ever had tracking issues with pads that had grids printed on them.
I always use your typical cheap foam mouspads you can get from places like ArtsCow. I had a few with my insignia made about ten years ago, and they're still working fine with every type of mouse I use, though they periodically need some scrubbing.

Cooler Master mpa-mp720.

Large for people who like a lot of mouse movement, easy to clean, very precise surface, very rigid, you don't have to use the lighting.

Thanks all for the ideas. I'm using paper right now, never thought to use cardboard.

What I mean is patterned, and texture either works well with one condition: matte surface. Since shiny surface even has patterns in it since LED reflects too much and blind the sensor.

An old hardback book works.

What's the problem here? The mouse can't handle surfaces that are too smooth?

This is just one of those cheap fold-up tables, guess the texture on it is throwing it off.

Found a cheap plastic mouse pad at work that's doing the job.
