Hello all. I am building a clone of my first PC.
486dx4
16mb ram
Windows 95.

I have no memory of what soundcard I had and am still learning about the different features of soundcards from back then.

Out of these 3 cards which would VOGONS members use?

Creative CT1350B REV 3 Soundblaster 2.0
Creative Vibra 16s
Yamaha MF-719 (has general midi chip YMF704C-S)

I think I’d pick the Yamaha.

Check out DOSBox Distro:

a lightweight Linux distro (tinycore) which boots off a usb flash drive and goes straight to DOSBox.

My vote goes for the Yamaha too (notbiasedatall 🤣). It is a much better Windows card than the others and works great in DOS, plus it will let you use MPU401/MIDI music in pure DOS without needing an external MIDI device (although YMF704 isn't particularly great sounding compared to most external options).

Third vote for Yamaha, at least assuming the card isn't noisy as hell. In Windows it wins hands-down from the other two, in DOS it offers full SBPro2 support, but no SB16. The Vibra does SB16, but not complete SBPro2. Both can do full SB2.0 compatibility.

The yamaha has significantly less noise than the 2.0. I have also read you can move one of the jumpers to help with that although mine may already be set to do this. Need to read the information again.

I am now installing 95 with the yamaha installed!
Hopefully this time the CDRom drive will not dissapear once windows is installed.
