Is it possible to swap a MediaGX CPU for a more powerful one? Wikipedia says it's impossible to even upgrade the CPU to a higher clocked one on the same board, which makes no sense as the processors are socketed. So, does anybody have experience with putting in a GXi or GXm into a board that has a regular GX 133?

MediaGX is not a CPU, but a SoC. It also contains a memory controller, the Northbridge, graphics, etc.

While GX, GXi, and GXm all use the same socket, they are not compatible to each other at all. They are bound to the mainboard they are installed in.

I've had success in upgrading the CPU in socketed MediaGXm motherboards to faster MediaGXm or GX1 chips. I didn't realise there was a socketed MediaGX-133. Do you have a photo of this? I thought all GX chips from 120-166 MHz were BGA.

It may as well be BGA, I didn't actually check in my system. I imagine that's the difference between "BP" and "GP" SOCs?
