Hi all,

Will the Chaintech 5TTM1 M201 motherboard work with the AMD K6 2+ ? I had thought not which is why I bought a proper Super Socket 7 board but if yo follow my post here: Re: Windows 98SE and USB, a tale of woe.. you will see I am not getting on well with that board at all it seems.

I am reading for example here: http://www.romulus2.com/articles/guides/newlife/newlife.htm that some K6-2+ CPUs do some multiplier magic to enable them to maybe work on non Super Socket 7 boards but on the other hand I am not sure of voltage support ?

Hi
I think it won't. It has "Jumperless CPU Setup". So the BIOS should know not only CPU init procedure but also manage to setup proper CPU core voltage.

Multiplier is simple: set 2.0 and you get 6.0 on K6-2 >=400MHz (and Plus), so set 133MHz and you'll get 400MHz, regardless of whether you set it via jumper, switch or BIOS setting.

Voltage is a bigger issue. I hate this kind of compatibility table that tells you what works and not, but not why. However no CPUs with VCore below 2.8V seems to be supported. You can get away with 0.2 or even 0.3V higher than specced if you cool well, but that means max 2.3V for a K6Plus. 2.8V is 0.5 higher than that, 0.8V higher than design and will lead to fried CPU. Even for a non-plus 2.2V K6-2 I wouldn't want to go over 2.4V or maybe 2.5V.

There is a similar Chaintech mainboard that supports some K6-2 2.2v - Chaintech 5TTL. I don't know if the CPU core VRM is the same.
There's a little chance that its BIOS can be compatible with 5TTM1. Trying to use an alien BIOS is dangerous for a CPU and a mainboard . An alien BIOS can brick a mainboard. So the programmer should be in hand to resurrect bricked mainboard.
