When adding a CR2032 coin cell holder to a DS12887 Dallas RTC, should I or should I not cut the connection to the battery within the IC? I have seen people do both, and I can't see any reason to cut it.. Just wanting to be sure..

Whenever possible, cut it. At best, it's just an additional electric resistor that drains the new battery faster. At worst, the current flow from the new battery will cause it to corrode and leak.

On the other hand, I have made versions with it cut, uncut with a diode, and uncut with no diode. No difference between them so far.
