I'm working on a Packard Bell Socket 7 system (yes, I know, this is already a bad idea) and trying to get it running as best as possible, but that's not very easy when there's no L2 cache on the board (fixing that will uh...require a professional friend's help) and I can't update the BIOS. I have I believe all the relevant information I'd need to find a BIOS update but I've never actually found one, or any documentation on this horrible 430VX motherboard at all really.

Attached are screenshots I took of SiSoft Sandra 99 running on the computer showing the BIOS and motherboard info that the computer is willing to report.

What is the model of the computer or do you just have the motherboard itself?

This looks like it might be version 1.25

If your hope was bigger drive support, you are probably out of luck .

Oh no, drive support is fine, I was hoping actually for better RAM support. The current BIOS version is extremely picky about RAM, refusing to boot with most of the stuff I've tried. I finally lucked into getting it to boot with 64MB of what I'm pretty sure is EDO RAM that used to be in my PII system.

If your intention was installing more than 64MB of RAM, do take note of the fact that the 430VX chipset is not able to cache more than 64MB . Installing more than 64MB RAM can degrade performance (except for workloads with big datasets in RAM).

The 430VX supports SDRAM, but it is unclear if your PB810 motherboard actually does .

This might not be a BIOS but a chipset limitation. i430VX was the first SDRAM chipset and - like the Via VPX incidentally - could only handle small-size SDRAM chips. I forget the exact technical reasons, but bottom line is that basically only 16MB and 32MB DIMM are likely to work, and you need 32MB DIMMs with 16 chips, not the newer ones with 4 chips. So to get 64MB with SDRAM you need two 32MB DIMMs with 16 chips each.

Correct. Info on your board:

The board was made by BCM, there is a similar but not same retail board under the name FM530.

Honestly, this motherboard is terrible and if this machine didn't have that awful "LPX" form factor I'd have moved 0n to a different board by now, but I do like the way the computer looks on my shelf and by some miracle it just has no yellowing so I might as well try adding cache to the board to make it less awful.

I'm just going to stick with the 64MB of RAM but I'll install the BIOS update anyway.
