I bought several PowerPC boards recently. For some reason the seller decided to take of the heatsink from all of the CPUs to take pictures of them. I just now realised that he broke of a part of some the CPUs while doing that. There is a plate that was glued over the die for some reason. Perhaps to protect the die? On the first picture you see one of the CPUs that were split apart. The top plate still is stuck on the cooler. On the second picture is the only one that I have that is still intact.

On the damaged CPU the die seems to be a bit chipped to two of the edges and I fear that it is dead. But if it should be still fine, what would you do? Somehow glue on the top-plate again or just put a heatsink directly onto the die?

Yeah, Apple machines/clones like my Power Mac 9600 and PowerCenter 150 just interface the die directly against the heatsink and I've never had thermal problems.
