I have a Promise FastTrak TX2000, it can be used as standalone IDE controller, but does not booting from non-RAID drives. So a small HDD for boot is still need.

Look for a promise TX2 Ultra 100 or 133 slot of them are labeled maxtor but they don't require a maxtor drive and they are fully bootable, they also support drives up to 2tb, the TX Ultra 66 supports drives up to 137gb and is also bootable
