hi guys
when it comes to test real pc memory we normally use MEMtest under DOS.

but what can i use to test video card memory under DOS?

i was given a small bag full of chips like these ones, and i plan on testing each with an old videocard like this one that has sockets

If your card has VBE 2.0, then the video memory test from Heron's boot CD works fine for testing video memory.

Yes Hiren Boot CD has some good tests. Being that is a PCI am guessing you need something that works on a some what older machine like Hirens BootCD 12 or 13. You could also look for Video Memory Stress Test 1.7.116 (Windows Freeware) or Video Memory Stress Test CE 1.21 (Dos Freeware).
Here is a link to similar question here at Vogons you should read: Testing VRAM on older cards under DOS?

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Which DOS memory test tool exist to test conventional memory (and XMS, EMS possibly) for PCs before 80386 CPU - 8088/86, 80186, 80286 that will fit on 360K floppy disk?

I could be wrong about this, but I have doubts about the durability of that socket to the multiple mating (insertion) cycles that will be required for testing a bag full of chips .

For example, according to this manufacturer, https://web.archive.org/web/20200201101517/ht … wtb_ic_plcc.pdf , their PLCC sockets are rated for 25 mating cycles .

EDIT : These https://www.mouser.com/catalog/specsheets/gs-12-158.pdf are rated for 25 mating cycles as well.

EDIT2 : These https://www.farnell.com/datasheets/217369.pdf are rated for 50 cycles .

EDIT3 : I just realized that I answered a post from last year . Oups .

The best memory test for MSDOS, I have ever used is <Speedsys>.The only problem is that it requires 386. For 8086-80286, the best option is <Check-it 3.0> (you can find it on winworldpc website)
