is there any program out there i can use to do a loopback test in dos?
i have some loopback blocks i can get my mouse to work on com 1 but not com 2 or 3 or 4
i have taken ports 3 and 4 out and testing with com 2 but CTmouse just wants to use the most in com 1?
it looks like i can force CTmouse to use com2 but i can't figure it out.?

Hmm yes Modem Doctor will check comm ports in DOS if you have a loop-back plug, I used ver 6 for DOS many times. CTmouse should scan COMM1 and COMM2 when trying to load. I have never had any problems with the MS 8.x or 9.x mouse driver is DOS not matter what mouse I used other than IF it was some odd mouse and had four buttons plus wheel, even then the basic mouse functions worked whether COMM1 or COMM2. Please tell me you are doing this on a real machine running DOS and not some emulator 🤣

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

ok i think i got it?

Pinpointing the Problem
You can’t communicate at all. Is the problem Kermit, the PC, the port, the connector, the
cable, the other computer, or something else? There is an easy way to narrow this down:
the loopback connector. A loopback connector plugs into your serial port. It has no
cable. Inside the connector, the receive and transmit signals are connected. This means
that whenever the PC sends a character, it immediately receives the same character.
Loopback connectors are available from computer supply catalogs and computer stores. If
you can find one, connect it to your port, and then run the following test:
__________________________________________________________________
A>kermit (Run MS-DOS Kermit)
MS-Kermit>set port 1 (Select the right port)
MS-Kermit>set local off (Let loopback do the echoing)
MS-Kermit>connect (Begin terminal emulation)
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz (Type some characters)
Alt-X (Escape back to the PC)
MS-Kermit>exit (Exit to DOS)
A>

Ahh so can you get echo off COMM1 but no echo off COMM2 using Kermit ? Is COMM 2 set to standard IRQ3 and 2F8 ? Is this a ISA I/O card or off the motherboard? Need more info !

Great ! Also Check for conflicts: two ports on same IRQ or address can mess up other ports too.

CheckIt! v3 and v4 do have a loopback test. Works with dongle and without one. 😀
