Hello all,

I recently bought from eBay an original copy of the game Thexder in 3 1/2 and 5 1/4, I tried to make copies of both formats using my 486 DX2 PC and after several errors (copy protection I think) my two drives became useless/damaged, one is a 3 1/2 1.44mb and the other 5 1/4 1.2mb. I switched to my spare drives and they work just fine, so there's no motherboard or cable issue. Installed the old ones again and they just don't work anymore, the system detects them but they can't read any disk I throw at them, it just says "Not ready reading drive A" (or B), which is the same error when no disk is inserted. So both drives got damaged or blocked, is there a copy protection that can damage your drives? it sounds crazy but I saw a YouTube video where the guy mentions that when trying to copy a game (can't remember which one) the 5 1/2 drive gets stuck and it needs to be serviced to unlock it, he mentioned this can happen to very old drives, 5 1/4 360kb or something like that and newer drives (1.2 mb) are immune to that kind of copy protection.... Anyway, my floppy 3 1/2 got damaged too, (I tried to make copies of both formats). Is this mere coincidence that my two drives got damaged? is there a software of any kind or disk that can damage your drive?? it's the weirdest thing, does anyone has any idea what could've happened?
(I cleaned the headers just in case but that didn't help).

For the record:
Both drives were working with no issues and I used them periodically for the last 6 months, also the PC.

My 486 build:
Mobo: Biostar 8433UUD
CPU: 486 DX2 66MHz
RAM: 16Mb
CD-ROM and the 2 floppy drives I mentioned.
DOS 6.22 / Win 3.11
HDD: Compact Flash 2Gb (IDE to CF adapter)

Thanks for reading!!

I have heard of weird stories like this but never happened to me or any one I know. More than likely (a few guesses) the original disks media could have had contaminants on them that messed your original drives heads up while they were "cleaned" when you tried to copy the data OR the drives were near death already and they just failed coincidentally at the same time. You should read this thread here about Thexder original (does not apply to Thex 2):
Sierra's Thexder
I actually have a Copy2PC ISA card and software but have only had to use it a few rare times as there as "hacks" to bypass most of that late 80's stuff if you own the original disks

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Thank You Horun,

yes, it's very weird, this left me scratching my head like never before.... thanks for the link.
Actually, the 3 1/2 drive is brand new (old stock) that I got from eBay... crazy!

I have read warnings recently about old disk drives and the DOS format command, if you try to format 80 tracks on a 40 track drive for example it could damage the heads when it tries to move past its physical boundaries. But I'm skeptical whether that was ever really a big problem. Not sure if that can be leveraged as a copy protection scheme. Even if it were possible, I really doubt Sierra would have done such a thing.

Did you try cleaning the heads with IPA? It could be the case dirt/mold got transferred from the old disks and now the heads are dirty.

Yes... I cleaned them again and managed to get the 5 1/4 back to life!!! wasn't so lucky with the 3 1/2, and I cleaned them really good this time (Q-tips and 90% alcohol) . I may have damaged something while cleaning the heads of the 3 1/2, anyway these still are easy to find for cheap, I'll have to shop on eBay to get some spare units.

Thank you all for the comments!

Exactly!, I doubt Sierra would get you in that kind of trouble. It looks like I got some disks in really BAD shape!
