MR BIOS should be available for this board. Try relaxing some timings.

Ah okay so the chipset might be the limiting factor. All right. Anyway now I am a bit excited about the mr bios stuff. I already found a particular image file but now the question of flashing.

1. Can I just flash the bios? With amiflash or Uniflash? I assume not.
2. How to do it then - buy a flash /eeprom and try the shadowRam-relaceOldBiosChip-inOperations-with the eeprom and then run Uniflash?

Here a link to the file I found:

Uniflash won't be able to write a bios on a 386, it doesn't have the required circuitry. You need a pentium board to do this at least. You can try the "hotswap" method to achieve this.

Or buy a tl866

As for the chipset I am sure there are variation that support 33MHz 386 because I have one with a scamp chipset

You sure you aren't thinking of the SCAMP II?

I don't know. Here's the board in question that's using the chipset and a 386sx33

Very interesting. Of course completely different board then mine. Before getting into the theory of flashing etc (no Pentium board available therefore maybe your tll866 idea) I will try booting with turbo sw off maybe and some lower bios settings.

Edit: indeed my chipset mentions the 25 MHz

Dear all,

Seeing my picture above - do you know:
- what type of eeprom I will need and
- what kind of program device? The tl866 is about 55€ which is kind a lot. Some Chinese alternatives like this:

Unfortunately programmer you linked is for serial eeproms, so not suitable 🙁 Your eprom is parallel one.

If you remove sticker from IC, you will get eprom type (probably UV erasable 64KB device - 27512 or 27c512).
Any 64kB pin compatible eeprom or flash will be ok. For example SST27SF512.

Probably it will be easier to ask someone from your area to program chip for you.

Thanks a lot. I saw that it won’t be pin compatible but the price was good so I thought there might be similar ones but pin compatibles out there.
I will look further and will try it. I’m currently in learning mode so I want to try it on my own u know

Thanks. I will also have a look if my network card is able to do it. It has a boot rom but I’m quite sure ... ah I will just check whether it has writing capabilities

Regarding flash: the ST one is hard to get especially short term. What about this:

27C512-100 EPROM, 512 Kb (64 K x8), 4,5 … 5,5 V, FDIP28W or NM27C512QE-250

I assume both with cmos this UV erasable but in worst case I have such one from my car equipment

Yes. Eproms starting with 27 are UV-erasable (28xxx are EEproms and 29 are Flash devices).
But classic eproms usually needs higher programming voltage 12V-21V, so you have to use dedicated programmer.
Some time ago very popular (among hobbyists ) was Willem Programmer (which was connected to LPT port). Sometimes you can buy this second hand.
Flashes or EEProms needs only one voltage (same as VCC).

There are also OTP (One time programmable) 27xxx eproms - without window. Avoid those as they can't be erased.

EPROMS: The minimum you need to know to burn your own

You can also try to program FLASH/EEPROM using ethernet card with Flashrom program.

Yes right thanks. Unfortunately I only have an isa 10mbit card without programming features. So I will to for a cheap eeprom + tl866. Orders have been placed so I’ll be back after all tested.

Ps. I just wanted to write hey some years ago already that I was owning a dedicated network card. But you should not say that when operating with a 386sx 😀)

I think I am mistaken about MR-BIOS being available for SCAMP. I think it's only available for the TOPCATsx, another SX chipset from VLSI.
