Hello VOGONS.
Recently, I got ahold of an Asus P5E Deluxe socket 775 motherboard to do some extreme overclocking of my QX9650 with it, and, as I usually do, I completely removed all of the heatsinks off of the board so I could give both the board and the heatsinks a good cleaning, and then reattach the heatsinks with new TIM (pads and paste). However, I was caught off guard by the fact that the X48 northbridge had an IHS on top of it.
That got me thinking: Did anyone ever try delidding this northbridge (does only this board have such an IHS, or do all X48 boards have them?), and did Intel use paste or solder underneath the IHS? I'm very curious as to whether it's possible to delid the northbridge and apply high-quality thermal paste or liquid metal to improve thermals in order to get better FSB clocks. Kinda dumb, but I could see that being a thing.
Thanks!
