Hello!

Many of you might be familiar with this combo floppy model. The 3.5" unit might become unoperational.

The culprit is usually the rottig/leaking electrolytic capacitors. In the past I had one drive that was beyond repair. The leaked goo destroyed circuit traces and fried the controller ic, seemingly shorted Vcc to data lines.
This one was not that bad.

The electrolyte residue was removed fairly easily and had no damaged traces.

I removed most components around the bad capacitors since the goo got everywhere, even through the circuit vias to the other side of the pcb.

The smd resistors and caps proved undamaged so I put them back.

Not too pretty but it works. These new electrolytic caps should last long.

And then... when I was reassembling it to the 5.25" chassis the alignment was lost. One half of the arresting screw for the opto sensor just dropped out. I haven't even touched it. Seem like the torque was too much and over the years it weakened the screw.

Right now I kind of lost interest to continue 😁

If anyone has one of these drives better check those caps on the 3.5" unit before they cause trouble!
