I tried over- and underclocking the multiplier on Mendocinos before myself with no success. It always stayed the same.

I can confirm that this is true for my Mendocino Celeron 466 as well.

I was unable to change its multiplier even through Abit's SoftMenu on my ZM6 motherboard.

CPU is pretty well covered.

GPU GF2 or GF4 MX is a good match for CPU speeds your looking at.
Someone will say a Voodoo card if glide is important so may as well suggest that now ($$$)

Sound the Live! can be had cheaper but finding the correct drivers can be a pain
Audigy 1 or 2 drivers are easier to deal with but you'll want to switch from wdm to vxd using the shortcut after the install.
In theory newer the card the better the sound but I struggle to notice any difference.

Games, what did you play back in your teens? They will still work. RTS's were in their heyday during this period, alot of the big names will work on this (C&C, Starcraft, Age of Empires, etc, etc)

Also mentioned above if you also add an ISA sound card you'll also have a very powerful dos gaming PC if that side interests you.

You can force a SBLive to use Audigy drivers. This should work on any model except for the infamous Dell SB0200 which is a Live in name only.

See here for more details.

I´ll help by suggesting some games from that era 97-99 (that your system will be able to handle properly):

(will avoid mentioning the titles others here have already and also FPS, since you clearly stated it)

- Incubation, Time is Running Out
- Heroes of Might and Magic III (arguably that franchise best ever)

- Command and Conquer Tiberium Sun
- Dune 2000

- Baldur´s Gate
- Diablo & Diablo 2

- Motorhead
- Collin McRae Rally (1)
- MotoRacer
- POD , Planet of Death

If you can´t find a MX440 as some have suggested, for these titles above a TNT2, an Ati Rage128Pro, Matrox G400 or s3 Savage4 will do just fine. Voodoo Banshee are not that expensive (yet).
256MB RAM I believe it is the maximum admitted by your chipset, which is also optimal por W98se.
