So I recently acquired an IBM 325T that is in great shape (came with the model m and IBM mouse, wish it had the monitor though). Anyway, the 386 era is completely new to me as I was a young child when it was new. I have already ordered 2 8mb ram sticks to max out it’s memory capacity and a 387SX coprocessor (I know it won’t help most games).

However I am wondering if the Cirrus Logic 5422 1MB that is built into the motherboard is any good for games or if there are better ISA video cards I should look for to put in it & disable the onboard video.

Second, based on the games that will run on the 386SLC (which I have read is kind of in between a standard 386 and a 486), what sound card would you recommend? Is it worth putting an awe32 or Gus in a machine this old? Or is it better just going with SB16, SB Pro, or a generic OPL3?

Thanks for your help.

Edit: Got a bit dyslexic and typed 5244 on accident when it should have been 5422

IMO,

The onboard CL-5244 should be good enough, it’s not like a better card will make Doom or newer games more enjoyable. Maybe consider other options if acceleration under Win3.x is important to you.

For sound I’d grab something like SB pro / SB16 / or clone with OPL3 - you don’t want to miss out on digitized voices in Wolf3D.

Check out DOSBox Distro:

a lightweight Linux distro (tinycore) which boots off a usb flash drive and goes straight to DOSBox.

Make your dos retrogaming experience portable!

Do you mean 5422? thats what wiki thinks a 325T has.

It's a good fast card, very nice match for a 386

Only reason I can think of upgrading is if you want a 2MB card for higher resolutions in windows, but really on a 386 and Win3.x I wouldn't bother. Good chance the card will be slower in dos anyway

Most games will be aimed at Adlib (OPL3) or SB Pro. (clone or not is up to you)
But if have a SB16/AWE sitting round doing nothing I'd use that rather then going out and buying another card

If you already have the AWE and no where else to put it I'd use that.
