From my experience revision 1.2 has problems far beyond simple cold boot. While you certainly can boot on Athlon XP (beyond Palomino) and it will work relatively fine, some software will refuse to work properly. 3DMark 2000 will just shut down randomly if you try to bench with SSE or Athlon instructions set. In other words, the system won't be stable. All while revision 1.3 will work even with Barton core flawlessly without any BIOS mods.
I've checked two identical Athlon XP 1700+ Thoroughbred-B: one is unstable and other one won't boot. Palomino 1500+ works fine even after overclocking.
I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.
