I have a pc with a 3800+ , Radeon 3850 AGP 512mb and 4GBram andAsus A8V Deluxe mobo.
The video card and CPU are a little mismatched, and i think even a 4800+ will be holding down the 3850.
Is the best way to go to replace the 3850 with something like a Geforce 6800 card?
I would replace it with a HD 5850 or a GTX560. I assume you are running WinXP?

There is nothing wrong with mismatching things. I have the same motherboard and I did put FX-60 cpu there and Geforce FX 5950 ultra video card and installed windows 98 there. Can't be more mismatch than that. It all depends on what do you want to do with the PC. If you want to use more powerful video card with your system it just means that you can increase the resolution.

I'm pretty sure that HD4670 is the most powerful card that came in AGP, and it's not much of an upgrade from the 3850. The best NVidia AGP card is even worse - a 7900GS, with no unified shaders.

Actually, the best Nvidia card in AGP is the 7950GT.
That being said, the OP was about the video card being held back by the CPU. Why are people suggesting GPUs that will be held back even more by the CPU?
Even the FX5950 keeps scaling in Win98SE up to a Intel X6800 at ~3.2Ghz which is way faster than the X2 3800+.
With is obviously being an XP machine I probably would put the 3850 in a faster machine and figure out what exactly I want to use the 3800+ machine for... Probably do away with the 3800+ all together and upgrade to a much faster CPU.
Where is the mismatch? It‘s a solid XP combination - apart from the fact that only 3GB of your 4GB RAM can be used.
You have a late AGP system with a late graphics upgrade solution. You can use the additional graphics power to enjoy higher AA/AF levels and max out the resolution and details..
The 4800+ gives you appr. 20% more CPU power for nearly 100€. Optional You can look out for an Opteron 180 (4800+, but cheaper) / 185 (FX-60, but locked multiplier) / 190 (fastest S939 CPU).
