Hi guys ! I just got a DTK 386 dx-33 keen-3336 with a turbo switch that can go as slow as a 286 16 or 386 sx 16. Check my pictures for fun, cool system. ( i will add more later and for the 486 too.)

I have 2 new 486 computers too.

3DFX tests results, just for fun:

On one of them, the intel 486 dx-66 with lucky Star pci board, i did some tests with a 3DFX voodoo 3 and a banshee 3dfx. Just for let you know. Tomb Raider on both 3dfx cards runs very well in glide to my surprise. Most of time it got 30 fps when no action around. 25 fps with a few action. 17 to 25 in battle and worst fps was 13fps for a few seconds only. I made the first stage. The game is really playable to my surprise ! LoL!
Screamer 2 in glide is only barely playable with the voodoo3 i think it got around 15-25fps. worst around 10 fps. To my surprise the game runs much worse with the banshee its like 5 to 15fps. So im surprise you got more fps with a voodoo3 vs a banshee on a 486 dx-66.

I did test all theses games too in glide or d3d in windows 95: Moto Racer, NFS II SE and Croc.
None are playable to me. NFS II SE and Croc runs like 5 fps in glide mode. Moto racer is barely playable in d3d in 320x200 and details at 2 or 3 but look awful at low details.

My Questions : (Thanks a lot )

1. I use Ontrack disc manager 9.57 with my 20gb hard disk on my 386. But i made 10 2gb partitions in fat 16 using easy install. All works prefect in dos 6.22 and windows 95 osr1 until now. But could it be a problem to have 10 2gb fat16 partition in dos 6.22 ?? Until now dos 6.22 detect all of them correctly. I have some dos games in different partitions ? ( i didnt succeed using more than 503mb limit with the dtk own bios ver 3.0. Even one 2gb partition is rewritten and erase data on the same 2gb partition) ( i have the original 500mb hard disk but 25% of it have bad sectors in the last section of the hard disk. First 300mb is 100% good)

2. Is it better using "Philslabcomputer" EZ-Drive or ontrack disk manger 9.57 ? Would my Maxtor 20gb work in EZ-Drive correctly ? I hesitate to reformat everything with EZ-Drive because it seems EZ-Drive use 5kb conventional memory vs 15kb for my ontrack driver. And i fear the 10 partitions of my first question become a problem later in dos 6.22.

3. I tried differents video cards and i got interesting benchmark result with the 1mb OAK ti087. The 087 is really a fast card for a 386 maybe as fast as a isa cirrus logic 542x and it has a turbo jumper that made a difference. But the dac is 8bit and i cant use 16bit colors in windows 95. Is it a way to get 16 bit color with this card ?

4. 2 questions. 1. In one of my 486 i have a Cirrus logic 5426 vlb video card, and it do a lot of vertical lines problems in all lcd monitor, do you know any trick to remove that strange vertical lines ? 2. i'm a little disappointed that pretty much every pci video card of my other 486 ( dx2-66 ) are more faster ( trident 9440, S3 trio64, banshee..) , more fps in doom than this vlb cirrus logic 5426. ( and the vlb cirrus 486 is a dx-4 75mhz, faster than my other 486 at dx-66 ) Is vlb much slower than pci ? is this vlb cirrus 5426 slower than normal ?
(But its still much better than isa Oak 087 and isa trident 8900c( by the way trident 8900c is really a slow card even too slow for a 386, a lot better result with oak 087))

5. I think my 386 dtk keen-3336 in non-turbo mode slow down the cpu at 16mhz. is it a way to verify that ? I know that LM20 show it running at 16mhz. and speedsys result are around score 3 or 3.5 ( i know non turbo mode disable cache because it already said in manual.

For your curiosity, Of my 10 retro computer builds and using all slowdown utilities possible, only one of them can have a 286 speed. Its my Pentium II 266 mhz running at 133mhz with both cache disable. I got 2.51 score in speedsys, at least some 8088 games are playable at that. ( i will buy a 8088 in future for these old games 😀 With Bret Johnson slowdown utility and /XT parameter a lot of 8088 games run at correct speed with any build, but it using interrupt to get 8088 speed and some 8088 games freeze completely or dont work.

- will add others questions later that i just forgot.
- I will add more pictures when possible.

Thanks a lot for answers about my questions.
Thanks for reading my tests too.
Have a great day everyone 😀

Pictures: The computer in front of the motherboard is my ProSyS 486 dx2-66, fic 486-pvt-io motherboard. The motherboard is my other 486 dx4-75mhz with a luckystar ls486e rev c1 motherboard. ( im building it right now)

The other picture with 2 computer. The top one is my 386 keen3336 intel dx 33mhz. The other one is my ibm Pentium 233mhz mmx.

The interior pictures are from my 386.

By the way, my pentium 233mhz mmx has something special. It can run at a real 100mhz pentium speed. it seems to be rare.
I dont remember perfectly, but i think its by multiplier at 2x and 50mhz bus speed or 1.5x and 66 mhz bus.

The Seanix computer on picture is my Pentium II 266mhz. and Compaq Presario 5660 is a Pentium II 450 mhz. The Aopen computer on the right, is my Pentium III 1000mhz overclocked to 1126mhz with a Voodoo 3 and Geforce ti4200 with a Sound Blaster 16 and a Sound Blaster live 5.1

I have others computers builds not on the pictures right now. i have 10 complete builds. and 5+ others motherboards and cpu parts that i have to build in complete computers in future.

Nice D-series! I love that TV, have 2 of them myself both 32" and RGB modded. Like a massive arcade monitor!

My sega 32x is svideo modded and sega genesis games looks awesome on that tv in s-video ! 😀

If anyone know if i'm going to have some problems with dos 6.22 and the 10 fat16 2gb partiton made by ontrack, please let me know guys! Thanks a lot !

You are indeed going to struggle with more than 4 partitions in DOS 6, which would get you around 8GB of usable space.

If you do want to utilize the full 20GB properly, you'd probably be best with DOS 7 & using FAT32 partitions instead. You could install Windows 95B or above on there and just use it in DOS mode, or download the unofficial MS DOS 7.1.

Either EZ-Drive or Ontrack should work, so just pick the one with the least RAM usage.

Thanks for answer. Until now all 10 2gb partitions work in dos 6.22 but i have to do more test.
Honestly i really only need 4 2gb partitions but i still try to get all the 10 partitions working.

1. could it be a problem to have 10 2gb fat16 partition in dos 6.22 ??
You should be fine. Dos only supports 4 PRIMARY partitions not drives total. Logical drives held in the extended partition your only limited by how many drive letters you have available.
BUT
6.22 has trouble with physical disks over 8GB which maybe why your last partition is bringing up so many errors. So you can either just not use that last partition or go over to fat32

2. Is it better using "Philslabcomputer" EZ-Drive or ontrack disk manger 9.57 ? Would my Maxtor 20gb work in EZ-Drive correctly ?
Both are more or less the same. whatever works better for you.

4. 2 Is vlb much slower than pci ?
Keep in mind your PCI cards are much newer. For a fair comparison you would want to compare the same chip on a VLB and PCI card.
People have and from memory most cases PCI did win, but PCI is boring as well 😉

Nice machines overall though, look forward to reading more about them

Thanks so much for all these answer, its really appreciated !

I will make a new topic in a few minutes, i have to know the power switch pinout of a AT power supply. I need to connect it to a atx case. ATX case has 2 pins for the power switch. I dont want to make a mistake and burn everything. Thanks.
