I have this Cirrus Logic CL-GD5428 VLB and it has two sockets to add an additional 1MB of ram and I was wondering, what would be good chips to get for this card? I'm thinking of using it in my 486/100 windows 3.11 set up to get into the 1024x768 16bit video mode.

Then think again. Unfortunately the GD5428 doesn't gain you any extra resolution/colour depth with 2MB, it just gives you some extra (and awful-looking) interlaced refresh rate options. Unfortunately all too common with early VLB chipsets. So with VLB, just having the option to install 2MB isn't enough, you need to check that the chip can do nice things with it too. This also applies to 2MB vs 4MB in some later VLB (and early PCI) designs, by the way.

Hmm. That would be sad.

I was reading through this documentation and it implied that the 5428 seems to support 1024x768 64k colors (interlaced).

I got a similar card. I successfully upgraded it with 2x HYB514171BJ-60 DRAM SOJ40

But yeah, as previous poster stated, unless you got a monitor that can display interlaced resolutions, (my LCD's will not) the upgrade is essentially cosmetic.

If you like instant headaches: sure. If you want something you can actually look at for longer than five minutes: nope, interlaced is a no-no.

Ironically LCDs could make it bearable with their inherently flicker-free design, but they can't handle these modes as a rule. Maybe some really old Eizo might...
