I need to buy a psu for my pentium 3 build. I currently have a weird proprietary gateway psu rigged up temporarily. I have had trouble finding out if I need a -5V line and what kind of wattage or amperage my parts would draw on each of the voltage lines (3.3v 5v and/or 12V). I would love to just slap in a modern 750W psu and call it a day, but I’m not sure if that would work based on 3.3/5v vs 12v draw and need for -5v. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Asus p3b-f motherboard
Pentium iii 1000mhz cpu (Future switch to 1.4ghz tualatin possible)
512MB RAM (4x128MB)
2x 120GB 7200RPM IDE HDD
CD-ROM Drive IDE
DVD-ROM Drive IDE
LS-120 SuperDrive Floppy IDE
Epson SD-800 Combo 5.25” and 3.5” Floppy Drive
GeForce FX5500 256MB AGP GPU
Diamond Voodoo 2 12MB PCI
Belkin 5-Port USB 2.0 PCI
3COM 10/100Mbit NIC PCI
Creative Sound Blaster 32 CT3600 with 32MB (2x16MB) RAM

You should be good to go with a modern(ish) PSU on such a system.
Try to get one with at least 25A on the 5v rail if you can.
It's mainly the Athlon XP systems of that era that are very hungry for 5v.
Don't worry too much about the -5v as it's mostly, only needed for a few old ISA soundcards and suchlike.
I use Corsair TX-650 PSU's on my rigs, with a 30A 5v rail.

Good luck and have fun!

Cheers

Anyone know if the Sound Blaster 32 CT3600 ISA soundcard needs -5V? It’s similar to the awe32 and awe64 so I’d bet it is the same as those, so if you don’t know about the ct3600, anyone know if the awe32 or awe64 need -5V? If yes for any of these, any idea on the amperage on the -5V needed? If it’s low enough I could build a smaller inverter.

No the SB32 does not require -5V, the only Creative cards that do are the early Generation ones like Sound Blaster 1.0, Blaster 1.5, Blaster 2.0 IE: the CT 1300 series cards like CT1350B.
Basically anything after a CT1600 would not require it.

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun
