So, I broke one of the plastic clips on the mounting bracket for the stock Intel Socket 478 heatsink. Therefore, I need a new cooler. I really don't like the stock heatsink mounting design as I find it difficult to install and remove, and the plastic parts are fragile.

I went on eBay and found this cooler. It's a Foxconn CRSBW model 342291-001. Instead of the plastic clips, it has 4 screws.

Does anyone know if this screws directly into the motherboard, or is there some kind of retention bracket that I need for it?

Thanks.

I did a search on eBay, Amazon and Aliexpress. I only found 1 socket 478 retention backplate for sale, and it was a bit expensive ($9). There are tons of Socket 775 and newer backplates for sale though that are under $3. Do you know a site that is selling Socket 478 retention backplates for cheap (under $5) or in bulk? If not, I guess I will bit the bullet and buy the expensive one I found.

Thanks.

Backplates seem to be much cheaper in my area - would it not be simpler to replace the whole bracket / backplate assembly as these seem cheaper from China?

The only back plate and bracket I saw for sale is the clip type. I want to avoid the clip type bracket and back plate and go with the screw type. As far as can tell, the screw type uses only the heatsink and backplate. I don't think there is a bracket for the screw type. If I am wrong, please let me know.

I've only seen 1 screw type backplate for socket 478 for sale.

If you know where I can find the screw type backplate for sale for cheap from China, or anywhere else, please share the link.

This is a picture of the screw-type backplate I found. The screw-type cooler I found is pictured in my earlier post. Is there a bracket that goes with this?

Thanks.

Maybe take a step back, as on checking that heatsink appears to be designed for 533MHz Prestonia / Gallatin Xeon processors for the HP / Compaq xw6000 workstation, rather than skt478 (did you see a compatibility list that said otherwise?)

The eBay listing says it is for Socket 478. Is the eBay listing incorrect? It is Foxconn part number 342291-001.

Think the listing is wrong - these are designed for 1st generation skt 603 / 604 boards like those in the xw4000 & dual processor xw6000 workstations

Take a look here for some cooler models to look for:

You can also do a Google search for:
Socket 478 heatpipe

That should point you in the right direction as well.

Should be much easier to find a good cooler with the model numbers.

I've been faffing with 478 coolers today and to be honest I'm surprised some entrepreneuring retro gamer hasn't 3D printed a bunch of Socket 478 sized backplates that have the ubiquitous 939/754(?)/AM2/AM3/FM1/FM2 mount-y hook system. so you can use any AMD heatsink on 478.
I'd buy one! I'd (terribly) design one if I had a 3D printer!

OP seems to be looking for one with a custom retention system, so something like this (not mine!)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Zalman-92mm-original … nk/224244337129

EDIT: "That still uses the stock motherboard mounting system though."

My bad 🙁 thxs @cyclone3d

There were some aftermarket coolers like this if I remember correctly.
