I tried reinstalling Windows 10 on my Maximus VIII Hero system. The DVD drive is still recognised, and the disc boots on my Llano (FM1) system, but no discs boot on the Z170 system. Does it sound like I need a new optical disc, or could it be a motherboard problem? The Blu Ray disc in the system is recognised by the BIOS, and the iso image for the latest Windows build needed a DL DVD disc, but SL discs no longer boot, and discs are not recognised by Windows, although the drive itself is recognised.

If the drive does need replacing, I'll be putting an M-Disc drive in it's place (can burn 100GB BD-Rs but not M-Disc BD-Rs - I need to save for a drive that can burn the latter for backups)

I would test a different drive (DVD or BR) just to make sure it is the drive that has issues and is not a board issue.
Even a newer CDROM and a XP or Linux bootable CD would be a good test.

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Turns out the DVD burner in this system doesn't support DL discs - can't even read them! Rather odd, given that DVD movies are generally DL. I swapped it out this morning with a Blu-Ray burner with M-Disc support that can read anything, so can get on with my reinstall. Only thing the new drive can't do is burn M-Disc BD-R discs, so that'll be my next upgrade.
