Me and my wife's computers are based around the Nforce 680i platform with 8 gigs of 1066 ddr2 and E8600's and they handle our daily everyday tasks with ease and we play GW2 and the game runs flawlessly for us. The newer C2Ds still have plenty of life left in them.

Interesting as my #2 machine (the one am posting from) runs a Asrock Penryn1600SLI (740/650 SLI chipset). Found a Q9650 for little back in 2015 (replaced a e8500) been running since 2008.
Works well still ! The old Nvidia chipsets do have a long life !

Both of my EVGA 680i boards were bought brand new by me back in 07 and they have been great. They make a fast stable platform.

It's really amazing how much performance jump there was from P4 to Core/Core2

definitely, and also how much easier most 775 motherboards are to work with than almost anything before it

the ease of swapping CPUs & cooling alone in comparison to most intel and amd from before, with the pins alignment and the often fiddly cooler 'snap on' catches. Having recently worked with a socket A board and a couple of 775 boards the difference is noticeable.

775 isn't really 'retro' as demonstrated by its continued usefulness with modern applications and browsing, but its fast becoming a favourite of mine!

I still love the 775 platform it's just so versatile and it's a ton of fun to play with. The system my wife has now started life back in 07 as a photo/video editing system I built for my uncle's photography business. After a few years he upgraded to a high end HP system and just gave it to me and it just sat from 2011 to just this past February when I cleaned but up and upgraded it for my wife to use. Besides just basic web use and YouTube/Netflix. She does lots of work in office for work and we both started playing GW2 back in February as well and both of our systems run that game beautifully.

Proves me right for not bothering to upgrade from an E4600 to an E6600

With VIA motherboards that do proper DDMA/TDMA and a card like X800/X850 series PCIe that does Win98 this is a great platform.

Interesting to see how an overclocked Celeron E3400 will performing compared to an E8200.

Cause these Days the chips are cheap as hell and i was building a litte neat shuttle XPC i got equipped with an E6300 1066@1,8 ghz.
So i put in the E3400 from my garbage box an oc'ed him with stock cooling and voltage from 2,6Ghz to 3,4 Ghz by rising the FSB from 200mhz to 266mhz.
So in theory with 1066@3,4 Ghz it should outperform the E6300 with ease regardless of the half amount of cache.

Yeah the E2xxx and Celeron 4xx are like that too, just strap the FSB higher and pow, away you go.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.
