I want to do a PCIe Win9x/Win7 dual boot system with a Radeon X850; what is the last chipset for AMD platforms (754,940,939,AM2) that would suit the bill?

Sure, but the question is which chipsets have Win9x support?

VIA K8T890 or K8T900 with VT8237 south bridge. Maybe VT8251 also would suit the bill, not sure. dionb mentioned ULi chipsets not so long ago in similar thread, maybe they also had support, although I doubt it.

Keep in mind, that you're stuck with PATA, if you choose VIA mobo without VT8237A south bridge.

Asus must have done one with a Promise controller, they work great with win 9x.

How about the ATi Xpress 200 (RS482) or VIA K8M890 chipsets?

Currently in talks for buying an MSI K9VGM-V with an Athlon64 3800+ for the purpose..

ATi Xpress 200 mobos had ATi or ULi south bridge. As I said, maybe ULi SB had Win9x support.

VIA K8M890

Same stuff as above, just with IGP.

VT8237A. Should work fine with Win9x and SATAII+ SSD/HDD.
