Hello,
I’m new here in the forum but I love old hardware,
I came across an old prolinea 486 50mhz that was for
Sale for 20€ here in my country. I used it for 6 months, I was using it daily for playing and some old games, one day I was trying to power it up and no sign of life, suddenly it worked normally again, now it has no power again, as I repair old PCs I’m currently trying to repair the psu, can someone give me some common failures on old psus?

I’m replacing all caps as it sometimes the psu gives power, there’s something else I should replace before I give it a try again?

Thanks !

The transistors or the control IC might be a likely source of problems. Although rare I have also come across resistors that failed open and this is not easy to measure in circuit, but in this case the PSU would be totally non responsive.

Recapped it and it’s running ok. Measured all rails and there’s no fault found.

Obrigado 😀
