It is normal to have a delayed post of about 5 - 10 seconds if you go beyond 200 MHz FSB (which is quad pumped to 800 MHz). This is the native FSB frequency. Anything above that, is considered to be an "overclocked FSB", and, as mentioned, the board can exhibit this behavior.

Now, what is NOT normal, is no post at all (especially at 220 MHz). This most likely can mean one or both of the following:
- your memory does not handle the 440 MHz clock speed, so you'd need to adjust the ratio to drop below 400. (it's actually recommended to manually configure it, this might improve the POST times), or use another memory module. I personally like the Geil DDR modules (2.5-6-3-3), with the blue heatsinks, they handle high frequencies like real champs.
- you have lost the silicon lottery with your E5800 chip (it probably needs a VCORE bump, but unfortunately this board does not offer any VCORE adjustments).

My initial thought would be the memory.

Most of these boards have an options for north bridge voltage and CPU voltage. They aren't descriptive - something like "high", but worth a try. And yeah, check your memory multiplier too. Most DDR kits rated for 400 mhz should do 440mhz without too much trouble. You might have to raise your CAS latency to 2 or 2.5 to get it though.

Ah... I already suspected the memory modules... I have OCZ Platinum modules 2x1Gb with CL2... Thought they would do just fine... But have G.skills CL2.5 lying around here.

......
Edit:
Found the problem. Still had the the memory manual on 400 instead of auto. Now it works without problems

Got it till 235 without instabilities.. I assume that I have to change some other values.. but not today... Will try it tomorrow

So called OCZ "Platinum" 1 Gb modules are based on Infineon memory chips which are prone to glitch in 3D games (visually) and it can't be detected by MemTest. Depending on luck, G.Skill might be exactly same Infineon chips or Samsung UCCC. The latter can go quite high in overclocking, but only with timing 3-3-3-8 or 3-4-4-10 or something in-between.

Ah... This explains the instabilities I encountered... Still had auto timings...
I did some research and found the g.skills seem to have also the infenion chips...
So what would be good modules.. the geils mentioned above? Or something else?

For FSB overcloking? Samsung Original UCCC/LCCC 1 Gb sticks can perform quite admirably with relaxed timings. Up to 300 Mhz, if you're lucky. Easy to find, cheap and compatible. You can buy a bulk of such sticks and pick a pair with best oveclocking result.

Inspired by this I did some research and found a list that might help others having the same question:

Winbond UTT vs TCCD (indicative comparison, not scientific):

Low Timings 2-2-2-X:
Winbond UTT (260-265 Mhz 1T @ ~3,4V) > TCCD (235-240 Mhz 1T @ ~2,85V)
Medium Timings 2,5-3-3-X:
TCCD (~300 Mhz 1T @ 2,85V) > Winbond UTT (263-268 Mhz 1T @ 3,4V)
High Timings 3-4-4-X:
TCCD (+300 Mhz 1T/2T @ ~2,85V) > Winbond UTT (265-270 Mhz ~1T/2T @ 3,4V)
Consumption (max = at which voltage they give their max):
TCCD: ~2,85V (max)
Winbond UTT: +3,4V (max unknown)

Yeah, well with 1 Gb sticks you're limited to Hynix D43, Infineon BE/CE, Samsung UCCC/LCCC and Micron 5B memory.

Micron memory with good overclocking potential is hard to find this days and prone to suddenly die. Not really an option.

Hynix D43 is similar to Samsung UCCC (high mhz with relaxed timings), but on average the results are worse, also they weren't used in overclocking memory, only as OEM/normal retail. But they can take higher voltage than Samsung, which may improve overclocking slightly more.

Infineon CE memory has best timings per mhz ratio, but had problems with unstable 3D and low bar for maximum mhz achievable. Also you find them only within overclocking brands like Corsair, Patriot and Geil, it's impossible to find them as normal OEM sticks.

Infineon BE is a mixed bag, some are good, some are mediocre.

Samsung UCCC is fine both as OEM and overclocking modules. Latter might be slightly better, due to initial selection of good chips from manufacturer.

Well ... I found an offer for mushkin silverlines.. 2x1gb kit.. they are not listed in my post... And until now I didn't find any info what chips are used on them. Does anyone know
-------
Edit: found a pair of Samsung with the uccc chips. I am curious how they will do... But I am wondering for they have no Heatspreaders - do they need them?... Airflow in my case is good.

How can you be sure? Because of timings?
Besides... The samsung modules cost me 10 € incl. shipping... 😀

So short summary:
I weren't able to make the overclock past 235... No matter what values are changed for the RAM in the BIOS. This happens with the OCZ and the G.Skil modules. I hope with the Samsungs it will be better.

No chance... Crashes beyond 235... And even that seem to be unstable... Maybe this isn't my terrain... 🙈😬... And at the moment I don't have the patience to dive deeper into the matter. Work and children eating my time and nerves..
I am absolutely happy with my 2x3.2ghz and the OCZ memory modules.
Nevertheless as soon as the new memory arrives I will check out what they can do...

235 is already almost 3.8 GHz. It's very possible that you are now running into a chip limitation. I have various E5800 CPUs, and only some of them are stable at 3.8 GHz without a voltage bump. And as far as I can remember, a few of them don't even post at this frequency. That's why I mentioned that you can hope for a 3.6 - 3.8 GHz overclock 😀
To my knowledge, there is no way to increase the voltage on the ASRock 775i65g (but I didn't invest a lot of time in this either).

Ah... Mothergoose spoke of 4.0Ghz... not that I need that speed, but is it possible to reach that with a e5800? Means 250!

There might be some E5800 ‘golden chips’ out there that can hit 4.0 GHz without needing a vcore bump, but I would imagine they are quite rare. 😀
All in all, not needed... The E5800 is still very fast for WinXP even at stock speed (and it’s insanely fast for Win98).

Yap... As I said above I am really happy with stock clock.. Don't know how far I can go with games. But recently tested doom 3 with almost everything maxed out (only aa 4x) it holds 60 fps almost all the time. What a great fun it is.

At the moment it looks like i got it stable with 230. This brought a slightly noticable improvement. But the stock clock does very well. So no reason at all for me to stay at higher rates for daily use.

If there were 98 drivers for the graphics card I would run it as a dual system. But... It's really nice as it is... Nothing found yet that I can only run in Windows 98 (naah wait... Wipeout 2097 but I this is another project).

In that case, changing memory won't matter.
