A 7870 would be a good fit for a fast LGA775 build. I tested a R9 270x (rebadged and overclocked 7870) vs a gtx1070 on a 3.4ghz e5450, and the difference in most games was like 10-20%, to no one's surprise.

in general yes, but really, it depends on the game and settings, if you go all out with resolution and MSAA you can make the 7870 perform poorly on some pre-2010 games I'm sure.

a component being bottlenecked doesn't really invalidate the combination, specially when we are talking "retro gaming" PCs and such.

Thing about "bottlenecks" is that there is always going to be some component that is "bottlenecking" the other components.

Past a certain point on a retro system is not going to matter anyway unless you are just going for the highest benchmark scores possible.

My Sky 500 is essentially a 7870, or a w7000 something, just odd packaging. It runs excellent under XP 32bit even with its 4 GB ECC memory. It doesn't ever seem bottle necked, or vice versa, with dual X5687 cpu's on a 5520 chipset. XP shows 3.13GB, and the rest PAE ram drive for memory over 4GB. Actually use it for other stuff but do play my old favorites. The interesting thing are the games that actually touch both sockets. Some things heat the gpu, some a cpu, few things heat both. A nice match up...

I still didn't decide with what to go... But yesterday I just played a bit around with my 5770.. and I am so impressed by what my graphics card can handle and put out in dosbox. Never had such overwhelming clear results with Nvidia cards.. 😬... Didn't try newer titles for now but for this evening I am planning to play mirrors edge and am going to tell how it performs...
BTW: the x5470 is on the way.. excitement grows... 😱

Windows 10. I didn't test XP and DX9 games.

Well... I made some progress... And it is becoming better and better... I really like this machine. At the moment I am still running the E8600 (stock.... Can't still believe that I only paid 3€ for it 😂) with a Radeon HD 5870. I set up my XP (x86) as far as my knowledge let's me (ssd modifications, pae patch) everything runs as perfect as desired. Until now I have no game that drops under 60fps (still haven't tested enough)...

Are there any hints how to further tweak windows xp?

It took a while but the x5470 arrived. Now that I have it, I am hesitating. The Core 2 Duo performs really well with the installed graphics card. Until now I found nothing that would justify the exchange...

Would I have substantial disadvantages with the x5470 compared to the e8600?

I think the only difference is you would see an improvement with the x5470 in highly threaded operations/multitasking and general OS performance. The Xeon is also likely to run way cooler even with the same cooling setup. I don't see a reason not to swap in the x5470.

I've been mulling over doing something like this (I have most of the parts but no space):

-FX4350 CPU: The little bro to the big 8350. I'd basically disable cores 1 and 3 in the bios, turning it into a dual core but leaving all of the shared resources (FPU, etc) active and dedicated to a single core. It would be interesting to see how Bulldozer performs when the cores aren't fighting for FPU time.

-Asrock 970M mobo: Not the best VRM, but should be more than sufficient for OC'ing 2 full cores. Has the ability to disable individual cores

-G.Skill 2400mhz DDR3 8 gigs (2x4 gig) - For dual channel operation

- Sapphire HD-6950 1 gig or a Sapphire Toxic R9-280X

-Sound Blaster X-Fi PCI-E

DO NOT buy/use Bulldozer/Vishera for WinXp OS, it's WAY too slow vs. Core 2 or Phenom II.

I was thinking R9-280x because it's basically a rebranded HD-7970 GHZ edition (GCN 1, latest and most powerful AMD GPU for XP). XP drivers don't exist for the R9-290x (GCN2) , but maybe you could mod the drivers? There were lower end GCN 2 GPUs with XP drivers FWIW.

Today I managed it... At least I installed the x5470. I first ran some benchmarks and I couldn't imagine that the 3dmarks would show such a difference compared to the e8600. That's really impressing. 😬

S775, c2d e8500, hd5850 or gtx560ti. That's my main xp rig.

I also recently built a low power sff build with am3, athlon x2 45w, hd5770.

XP had supported hardware from early 2ks through to early-mid 2010s...that's a lot to choose from!

I put the Xeon to 4Ghz in small steps... What the heck... It runs... And it runs stable.. temperatures stay close under 60 degrees during stress test... I would like to test my luck but I have this irrational nightmarish picture in my mind of a badly burned PC
