Hey all I'm still learning the basics around here, can someone help me out with identifying which of these parts will tell me what drivers I need to download? I've just swapped this motherboard into my computer and didn't get sound working though installing the Realtek AC97 driver. Motherboard is a P4B-M I'm running 98se and have chips with this writing on them;

P4BM2
1001

Intel FW829018A
L1300321
SL N

iTE IT8708F-A
0132-AXB
M3J374

C3DX CMI878/PCI-6CH-MX
HRTF 3D Audio

ASUS ASM58 Mozart-2

From what I understand, you have an Asus P4B-M.

Here's the user manual for it, it mentions the use of a C-Media 8738 sound chip, a common choice on boards from that time.
Therefore, you should look up drivers for the CMI8738, very easy to find.

As for the other chips, your board uses the i845 chipset and an RTL8100 NIC.
You shouldn't worry about the iTE chip, it doesn't need drivers.

I'm trying to install the drivers I downloaded from Vogons and it says "Can not find system files of Windows 98. Please assign the path again!". I can't find the folder it's talking about. Can you help please?

probably the win98 install files/cdrom

Try this file: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/audio … /cm275a_w9x.zip

BTW. Asus still hosts drivers for this motherboard: https://www.asus.com/AU/supportonly/P4B-M/HelpDesk_download/

1) VLSI SCAMP /286@20 /4M /CL-GD5422 /CMI8330
2) i420EX /486DX33 /16M /TGUI9440 /GUS+ALS100+MT32PI
3) i430FX /K6-2@400 /64M /Rage Pro PCI /ES1370+YMF718
4) i440BX /P!!!750 /256M /MX440 /SBLive!

Ay that worked! Thanks dude, and I got the motherboard drivers from somewhere else that seemed to work alright. Would have got them from Asus if I realised though.

Scratch that so I have system sounds but I can't get sound working on the CD Player accessory or sound working in the DOS copy of DOOM2. The sound tests are working fine on DXdiag though. I have all these options available which should I select?;

General Midi
Sound Blaster AWE32
Sound Canvas
WaveBlaster
UltraSound
Pro Audio Spectrum
Sound Blaster
Adlib

CDPlayer utility ? is your cdrom audio output connected to the soundcard connector.
Or otherwise, is digital audio enabled for the cdrom drive. (warning this will impair performance)

Because you have PCI soundcard, I suggest you to try windows executable of ZDoom CLASSIC
This one is working fine for me (on Pentium II 400Mhz under Windows 98SE).

Nah it's not a PCI sound card it's attached to the board

It's just meant to be playing it through the DVD drive but why wouldn't I be getting sound through my game either?

And exactly how does the chip communicate with the rest of the system? Look up CMI-8378, it's a PCI chip, regardless of whether it's on a separate card or soldered onto the motherboard.

Right, still learning here. So what does that mean for me? Does that mean certain things won't make sounds?

Here is a good review on the CMI8738 from Phil, for both DOS and Windows.

There are also drivers for it on that link.

Possibly, but be aware of the limitation. DOS basically doesn't know or support PCI so any PCI card needs to use some kind of workaround to allow themselves to be addressed using the ISA resources (DMA, IRQ) that DOS programs expect.

CMI-8378 is actually one of the better PCI chips in terms of compatibility, but no chip is perfect and the best two PCI workarounds (PC-PCI/SBLink and DDMA) won't work with your P4 chipset. The Yamaha YMF74x chips have similar issues.

The only chips that might offer slightly better compatibility are ESS Solo-1 and Fortemedia FM801 - but neither is even close to perfect. PCI and DOS, particularly PCI on P4 and later chipsets, just aren't an ideal combination.

If you look at the motherboard on Google images does that include any card that would fit in the little brown slot at the very bottom of the board? Under the two regular slots?

Nope. This little brown slot is probably one of AMR/CNR/ACR.
Probably most useless slot in computer history, albeit available on many motherboards.

Actually extremely useful for a very limited purpose for a very limited time. And that purpose was mainly legal/regulatory.

Useless now if you don't need a dialup modem (unless you are a fetishist you don't and if you are, you know more than you need already 😉 ), you don't need that slot or the cards to go in it. But if you did need one, they actually performed better (less latency) than dedicated hardware modems, and could do a lot more too as they were essentially low-level interfaces to the phone line, where hardware modems were just glorified serial ports as seen by the operating system.

Back on-topic: nope. Of no use whatsoever here.

I've just acquired an AGP graphics card for my computer now and I need the AGP drivers, I can't tell from this what I need to download. Can you help me?
