Gateway select Slot A system with Athlon 700 and AMD 751 chipset.

System powers on and shuts down fine in Win98SE from colt boot.

When told to restart from Win98SE system hangs at blank screen with POST codes C2, CC.
Shift + Reset from Win98SE works fine.
Keyboard lights do flash indicating at least the keyboard controller resets.

+5V -- OK
+12V -- OK
RESET Line -- OK
Power Good -- OK

If this was a 386 I would blame the keyboard controller, but it's all just emulated in a "modern" chipset like this.

Don't know if it's related (it's not a restart issue as such), but I was just reading this:
https://en.wikichip.org/w/images/9/90/AMD_Ath … ision_Guide.pdf

and (on page 9) there was apparently an issue involving cache corruption, specifically with Win98 suspend/resume.

I had one of these Gateway Jabil 'Kadoka' motherboards years ago and it was flaky with Windows 98 no matter what BIOS revision or set of AMD drivers I tried. It ran best with Windows 2000/XP. I wonder if the terribly limited AMIBIOS these boards had is part of the problem?

Out of curiosity have you tried running Windows 2000/XP on it and see if the problem still exists? Also what about installing Windows 98SE without ACPI support? http://smallvoid.com/article/win9x-setup-switches.html I have had success with that in the past to stabilize Windows 98SE on problematic boards/BIOS versions.

Also what about the Windows 98SE 'shutdown patch'? https://www.tacktech.com/download.cfm?file=mi … e/004756us8.exe

Installed the shutdown patch, no luck

It's definitely Win98SE related.

If you boot into DOS mode ctrl-alt-del will reset machine just fine.

Also tried booting to Win98SE boot floppy and running the included restart.com which also reset machine just fine.
