I've bee trying to scrape off an annoying and ugly repair sticker from a 545MB hard drive for the last 15 minutes. The mind wanders during such times, and I wondered how other people feel about these things. I'm not talking about factory installed brand/model/whatever stickers, but ugly ass shit OEMs, repair personnel or previous owners pasted or even worse wrote on hardware. How do you feel about them, and how do you deal with them?

a small amount of WD40 usually does the trick

It can stain PCBs or erase printed text under the label in my experience 😒

There are some special sticker remover chemicals as far as I know, but it's been ages since I went to a hardware store due to covid 🤣

Small bit of washing up liquid for sticky residue.
OEM and small labels don't bother me, all part of its history.

Stickers that cover part numbers of hardware or very noticeable (say a sticker crossing multiple ram chips) I'll remove

on external things, things that show i might have a go at removing it but for something internal i'd probably leave it partly for fear of unwittingly damaging something sensitive. It would be sort of (well, not really 😀 ) reassuring to know that a25 year old HDD was in a good state of repair 21 years ago!

I have a pecking order:
Dry soft cloth
Cloth+water
Cloth+water+washing up liquid (or cloth+foaming cleaner)
Isopropyl alcohol+cloth (aka IPA or propan-2-ol)
Methylated spirits (methyl alcohol/methanol)
After that point it's petrol/paraffin/<insert name of petroleum based product>

It very rarely gets beyond IPA in my experience.

I have a big old Cooler Master case with ATI/AMD/Creative/Seasonic labels on it, as well as an ID badge for some long-ago LAN party, all added by previous owner(s). I would never remove these.

Is this too much voodoo?

Lemon essential oil works best from my experience. Unlike Goo Gone, it doesn't leave an oily residue.

Just be careful with it as it can melt certain plastic.
