I am disappointed with the YouTube Retro computer community for building computers
That will not last. Built with cheap and sometimes proprietary components.
And expecting people to game on them.

A Retro gaming computer should be made with good quality non-proprietary components that will last.
Americans are larger than smaller europeans. Americans need a strong tough computer that can withstand a pounding
Of the switches, buttons, keyboard keys and can take a kick or two.

So I would like to know what basics components are built tough to take a beating and still work ?

Here are some:

Motherboards:
Gigabyte, Asus.
Intel Bx440
Intel 370

Hard drives:
Seagate
Hitachi
HGST
IBM
WD

CRT Displays:
Sony
HP
Viewsonic

Keyboards:
IBM
HP
DELL
Mitsumi
Keytronic

Computer Cases:
InWIN v500
Enlighten
Aopen
Cooler Master Wave ( Thick Aluminum )
Fata1ity ( Thick Black Aluminum )

5.25 CDROM drive:
Sony
Plextor
Panasonic
Yamaha
Teac

Floppy drives:
Mitsumi
Sony
Teac

RAM:
Infineon
Micron
Texas Instruments
Samsung

Sound cards:
Sound Blaster
Terratec
Yamaha
Crystal
DreamBlaster X2 GS
Turtle Beach

Speakers:
Roland desktop speakers
Klipsch pro media 2,1

And so using these Standard IBM Open PC Architecture components you can build a good quality computer that should be able to endure
Some serious game play and not break so easily.

As you can see these cases can take a beating and still work.
They are big and roomy and easy to work with. Easy to add and remove components from.
Standard IBM open architecture components.

You're doing it wrong, gotta build with stuff you love to hate, like PC Chips, Cyrix, SiS, so it stays alive to spite you.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Haven't we done this one before?

🤣 @ the relative lack of american brands. not even the relevant "Silicon Valley" ones made the list

They might not be made in America but these components are made for the North American market using imperial systems
Of measurement and built pretty tough to withstand abuse and rough treatment.

They work good and are dependable.
They pass the regression tests and meet expectation.

I do find the history of making or assembling electronics in America interesting, although I think that age had largely passed by the time we get into the 90s. There is definitely an American design aesthetic to some vintage computers, like the original IBM PCs and the atari products. When I think of American electronics though, I imagine old televisions and consumer appliances from companies like GE and the like. They definitely did make things sturdy back then.

Anyway, for me products that were sold in America don't strike me as any better built or more durable than products sold abroad, especially when all of them were largely assembled in Taiwan. You can probably source all American made computers from the 80's but I think it would be difficult to build a computer from all American sourced and manufactured parts much later than that.

Well, its not a secret that North American shoe and clothes sizes are larger than europeans.
Its not alway fatter but taller and bigger feet. And some times wider.

In terms of average height, USA is below most European countries:

It's just that the old shit is drying up, and people who are just trying to get into it are faced with rocket high prices for scarce parts at this point. I personally have more than a couple of builds that are not finished. And while I do have some of that rarer parts, I'm just trying to get them done this year and becasue its too much money now to be in this hobby unless you are building cheap boxes like the OP suggests. Or money grows on trees with you and you don't mind overpaying because it means nothing to you.

Even all of the remakes like dream blasters and new graphics cards and what not if it was 10 years ago no one would buy them becasue the real thing would of been cheaper. Which is one reason I haven't bought any of that stuff. You still might get lucky and get real stuff way cheaper than the remakes if your patient but that takes a lot of time which people don't have.

The writing was on the walls just a couple years ago, but the retro hobby is at the stage now, if you are just trying to get into it you are never going to experience a fraction of the stuff that people who got into it just 5 years ago will have unless you are willing to shell out massive amounts of cash and wait around a long time for parts.

I kind of wonder who that's more offensive to, Americans or Europeans?

Yeah, it’s almost certain that a gaming computer will break from abuse.
That is what PC gaming is all about.
Just like an Arcade console system. It does not last forever with out breaking.
I think they call it “Right to Repair”.
So you want a computer that will be easy to repair and use the most durable components available.

The blind generalisation about people's size in the opening post is honestly one of the dumbest things I've read recently.

And since when being big or not is supposed to justify mistreating your hardware?
