I think for the voodoo 3 you can go with a Pentium 3, about 550 or 600MHz. Try to get a board with the intel 440BX-2 chipset, they seem to be the most compatible ones. The voodoo 5 would go well with a Pentium 3 of around 1GHZ, or even a Pentium 4. Intel boards are very compatible here, and also good quality in my experience. When looking for a motherboard for the voodoo 3, bear in mind that they are only AGP 2X, so check that the AGP slot in your motherboard can fit the card physically.

I think you were spot on; issue was my Voodoo 5 5500 PCI I think.

The 5500 PCI I gave away in 2003 (reflashed Apple version, with DVI-out!) was a great addition to an i810e based all PCI mainboard and a 1300 Mhz tualatin-based Celeron.
It did a great job on Warcraft 3, which was all we played in LAN back then. I was always impressed how well it performed on that narrow PCI-bus, and the while system was very solid.

Try different drivers, it does make a difference.

Will do; commented in my other thread on how the constant slowdown/stop motion/FPS drops I had in Quake 3 on the PIII disappeared on my QX6700 system. Though I hate using XP because these drivers seem pretty janky 🤣. That's why my W98SE targets are so important to me; some games are just gonna work better in 98 and plus DOS.

You can have a win98SE system on a QX6700 , you just gotta have an MB that supports that OS.

My 98SE machine is a X3230 w/ a radeon 9800 pro and a Voodoo 2 12MB. I dual boot XP for ease of network access and some web stuff.

That is awesome. I had no idea!
