Hi all

I am assisting a client of mine who repairs industrial machines.

One machine is driven by a 386 PC, and whenever the power goes off (and it does fairly often here in South Africa) the machine loses it's settings, and needs to be reconfigured. Upon my advice we are going to replace the CMOS Battery.

It uses one of these Varta 3.6v batteries which is hard soldered onto the motherboard

I am looking to replace the battery with one that's a bit more modern, as I don't think those are even made anymore.

What would the best option be?

Thanks

well first things first you need to remove that battery quickly before it completely destroys the board, there's already a whole bunch of corrosion (the green colored stuff) you'll need to clean off and check for any damage on traces, it already looks pretty bad.

they still make replacement batteries for these, but other than that there might be a battery header on the board somewhere to just connect an external battery or you could replace it with a coin cell but then you need to modify the board to make sure it doesn't get charged.
