My GA-586HX (Rev 1.52) is giving me headaches.
Whenever I shut down Windows, the screen just turns black. The screen telling me to turn off the computer doesn't appear. I tried swapping CPU, RAM, graphic card. Nothing changed.
Anyone got an idea what the issue might be?

A bit more info please. Does the computer stay on but the screen is black? Which Windows version?
If it's 98SE, install "windows 98 second edition shutdown supplement". Also check the power options in BIOS.

As this is an AT board, it can't turn off by itself.
Screen turns black, without displaying the usual message.

Win98 SE.

Did a quick research. As it seems, this patch is for ATX systems that should turn off automatically, but don't?

What exactly do I need to look for?

What's the rest of your setup ? Do you have a network card ? iirc, realtek network cards (among others) are notorious for preventing the os from shutting down properly due to bad drivers

Trying to identify old hardware ? Visit The retro web - Project's thread The Retro Web project - a stason.org/TH99 alternative

This is most likely.

If you use an HDMI convert or such, possibly the display mode is not supported by the monitor, but guess you wouldn't have any picture at start up either.

Nope, no network card.
Just the bare minimum: CPU, RAM, graphics card and HDD. Tried different ones.
Even removed the cache as an possible error source.

Did you reinstall windows? Windows does not like us changing the hardware.

Try starting in safe mode and see if it shuts down correctly after that.

Problem persists.

Yes, it's an AT board.

Is it actively displaying black or the monitor goes to sleep mode?

The monitor is powered on and just displays black.

Does the computer respond at all once the screen has gone black? Like the num lock light on the keyboard working, or ctrl-alt-delete restarting it? May not help, but a possible solutions here:
Re: Enable "safe to turn off computer" message in Windows 98?
and here:
Re: How to enable "It's Now Safe To Turn Off Your Computer" [edit to add that that one has the same "setup /p i" suggestion as Garrett made.]

I was under the impression APM precedes ACPI and is usually standard on AT boards of this vintage (~1996 socket 7).
