Getting Samba going (on a Pi) literally reinvigorated my love of this hobby. I didn’t realize how frustrating it was to sneakernet files via USB and how off-putting that was in practice.

Same. There was a lot of "I'll get to that later" when I was facing a slow USB transfer, or burning a CD, or having to shut down the DOS rig to transfer a CF card. Now everything is drag and drop, and I find myself diving into things a lot more.
