(I wasn't sure which board to post this at, move if needed)

Using a Linksys LNE100TX which I found at Goodwill factory sealed in the box for $8.

I bridged my wifi network to an ethernet connection using one of these

I have Internet Explorer 6 set up with a TheOldNet.com proxy

That's a good idea, actually. Much better than using an outdated WiFi at home for the sake of compatibility (say, WEP64 and 802.11b).

Cool! Back then we (my family) had T-Online v1.2 software for Windows 3.1 with the then-brand new KIT standard.
Browsing the actual Internet needed an extra step.
The software was then showing an icon with a moving highway and Netscape Navigator showed up. Was NN 1.2 or 2.1, not sure.
It was installed on my father's Win95 PC, a 486DX40 with 16MB RAM..

About the same time, the Micky Maus Magazin was full of screenshots of interesting websites.
One issue even shipped with a CD-ROM that contained jokes as audio tracks and the T-Online software.
The jokes would nowadays qualify as "dad jokes". 🙄😂
Edit: It was issue #37 from '98, actually. My bad. 😅

Edit: Back in '96 things like QuickTime and Real Player were popular still.
Websites used *.mov and *.ra files for their embedded content, if memory serves.
My father had QT 2.x installed, I believe.
That was good enough to watch little videos in 160x120 pixels or so.
- I do remember watching the video news at tagesschau.de on that Win95 PC.
The modem was an 28k8 or 33k6 model, afaik.

Anyway, I don't mean to high jack your thread.
These things just came to mind because you're mentioning 1996.
That time was a time of transition to me.
It was roughly about the time when the people in my neighborhood slowly became aware of the internet.

Hey, I am happy to let you jack my thread. I like just chit chatting about times.

You may be interested to know that Protoweb has a proxy service too and they multiple options for speed including simulated a 33.6k connection, T1 and others. The downside is you have access to way fewer sites on theirs.

Thanks for your understanding. 🙂
Sometimes I'm simply taken away when talking about these things..😅
And if your sister is telling you that you "talk too much", that says something, haha. 😅

Also thanks for the tip! The modem we had in '96 was an external modem by Trust, I think.
My modem on my 286 was a beige Creatix modem. 14k4, I think.
That brings back memories of my school's computer lab, by the way.
Must have been a bit later. We used MS Frontpage to design our school's webpage.
It had this little speed counter in the lower corner.
It was telling how long a page needed to load at a given connection speed. 😃

Buy Amazon stock!

Amazon? That book store? Who's gonna buy books in the 21th century?
Invest into Yahoo! It will be the number 1 search engine forever!
3dfx is also a safe bet.

I may have to try The Old Net at some point. But what I'm more amazed at are the seemingly ancient 90's pages that inexplicably still exists. Stuff like:

This Tyrian fan page
http://members.iinet.net.au/~vannevar/tyrian/

This old walkthrough for Jagged Alliance, although the entire domain is super 90's.
http://www.thecomputershow.com/computershow/w … lliancewalk.htm

This Syndicate fan page
http://syndicate.lubiki.pl/

Although I will say, the Syndicate fan page has been updated with Syndicate news as late as 2021! Although it looks like a 90's style page, there is some more modern JS and CSS going on under the hood. Oh well.

Also, Nokia man. Mobile phones are the future.

Yes, definitely!
90% market share. How can anybody ever catch up to that?

Here is a video of me browsing the old web on my setup. It's pretty long so you may just want to scrub through

Only reason I network my retro rigs is file sharing but must admit for some reason having these 20+ year old PC's access the internet makes me happy, even if only for a few seconds before the outdated browser crashes
