Hello,
Recently I've got a old 486DX4@75Mhz laptop and I would like to upgrade the memory if possible. It's got 8Mb, I think 4Mb is soldered and there's a 4Mb stick accessible under the keyboard.
I don't know which type of memory I need to look for. Is it still available and easy to find ? Would it get very expansive nowadays ? Also what would be the biggest stick I could put in it ?
My laptop is a Zenith Z-Star ES and there is absolutely no doc available for it on google 🙁
Thank you very much !

You need FPM-Ram, based off the NEC chip. Not sure though where you might find those DIMM-like FPram. Don't expect 64 MB, probably 12MB will be the maximum.

Thx for the answer !
Do you mean that I can't use any "sodimm" 72 pins ? There are some of them on Ebay and they look similar, but I don't think it is FPM-RAM .. Which seems as you said very rare 🙁
An example of the Ebay item is MC-297-A70 .. That's not compatible isn't it ?
I count 36 pins per side on my memory stick ...

You need 16MB 5V FPM 72pin dimm, very rare because manufacturers quickly jumped from custom/bespoke Ram expansion solutions to 3.3V, then EDO then 144pin sodimms. Most available 72pin ram on the market is either/and EDO/3.3V.

But you might be in luck, electromyne.de has "16MB 72-Pin Fast Page D-RAM SO-DIMM Notebook Speicher 5V 60ns Cache Double-sided" at 19,99€.

Hey Thank you very much for this amazing reply. Unfortunately the 16Mb is out of stock right now, but there is two 8Mb items available but I'm not quite sure if they're OK :

Probably. One one hand 8MB for games on a 486 seems ok, on the other 12MB is a sweet spot with no games running well on 486 requiring more (someone correct me if im wrong), but the third hand says 20MB is the max supported so lets find that 16MB dimm 😜

I seem to remember someone looking for bigger 72pin dimms and ending up manufacturing one in the end, but cant find/remember the link 🙁

Yes I read about some limits around 20Mb but I can't find any information or manual for my laptop. Of course this 16Mb is probably better and it's nearly the same price as well.
And yes yes yes, (triple yes !), I'll probably manufacture my own stick too, I even plan to start a small business in the old very old vintage memory upgrade industry 😀

very confusing listing with picture of 3.3V 4MB module, but it claims to be "32MB 60ns FPM SODIMM 72-pin Memory Kit" for "570CD/570CDT", and that laptop takes same ram you need, two 16MB FPM 5V 72pin dimms. Might be worth a shot.

Thank you very much, yes the listing is quite confusing. I'll send them an inquiry but the German shop has my favor as I live in France.
