So... long time that I haven't posted here, anyways, got this nice complete Acer system from a friend yesterday, it used to be his grandparents PC that it was in use until 2004 and it was bought in 1998 from a business as he told me and there wasn't any personal files, only the original Acer stuff installed
Machine is from 1995 so, same age as me and it sports a 486/66, 16 megs of RAM, 1meg of VRAM (Chip by Cirrus), a Maxtor 300 meg hard drive, double speed CD-ROM drive by Mitsumi and two Epson floppy drives, one 5"1/4 and 3"1/2
The computer came with it's original Alps clicky keyboard, original Acer mouse and even rare, the original Acer 14" monitor and the AcerMagic soundcard with some typical Labtec CS180 speakers since the computer was aimed at multimedia
One thing that concerns me right away is the case which I know it was designed to be tool less but hell, I wonder how do you swap parts on one of those, today I added a 3com ISA ethernet card (Doesn't have PCI sadly) and I wanted to upgrade it's hard drive but I couldn't see a way to take it out, if there's a manual or some documentation I'll be really appreciated since I don't wanna break any plastic
It seems the AcerMagic soundcard is a rarity (I guess, not sure) since it has a Mozart processor and a real OPL3 chip (made on the 23rd week of 1994 unlike my real SB16 which has a datecode of the 45th week of 1993) and also I've discovered that these Acers have a turbo mode and the key combo to disable and enable it is in the case of this one, Ctrl+Alt + Plus (Numpad) try it out if you own a similar machine to mine or an older one with the same case
To be honest, I'm so happy to own a complete system like this one but it's so sad that the info on these is so obscure and hard to come by
Some pics:
And lastly, a pic I took of it today and yes it is connected to a switch and mind you, it took me almost 2 hours to fix the 3com card's IRQ and DMA stuff -w-
Yes, the thing is still full of dirt on the exterior but one thing right away that concerns me is ¿how much time I have to leave the monitor off and unplugged so I can clean it's pots?
Edit: I was able to upgrade it's HDD and CD-ROM drive but it was a BIG pain since the IDE controller on the computer doesn't like modern drives, it has to be from 1992 up to 2000 to work, idk why .-.
