I have a gateway G6-450 that I bought last year because it was the exact machine our family had in 1998. The motherboard has a WS440BX intel chipset that states in the manual that the maximum cpu it can support is a pentium 2 450 which it currently has.

I'm wondering what is the fastest CPU I can use with this motherboard? I believe the board can only support 100 fsb, but I'm not sure how or if I can provide a cpu with anything other than 2v which the pentium ii in it currently uses. Would a pentium iii 700 SL3XM work with this motherboard, or would I not be able to get the right voltage of 1.65v?

Look up the datasheet for the VRM chip. You might be able to run a Coppermine P3 over volted at 1.8v. You could also go for a Katmai (max 600Mhz). Your BIOS might or might not complain about unsupported chips.

I just tried a Pentium III 700 SL3XM in my WS440BX board and it would not boot. It boots just fine with a Pentium III 1000 SL5QV in an appropriate slotket, I would guess the fastest it would run would be a Katmai Pentium III 600 without a slotket.

{Edited post as I made a testing mistake}

Awesome, thanks for that info! Do you know what you need to have the voltage set to on the slotket for the SL5QV? Core voltage is listed as 1.75 but the slotkets I see can only set in increments of 0.1. I'm guessing 1.8 will work?

The one I used to test I actually have it set on 'auto' voltage and it worked. It has jumpers to manually set it but it seems to work on auto, I can check tho.

Help! PC won't power on with Slotket is pictured the one I used. (top one of the two pictured) I think it has setting for 1.75 volts.

A slocket will open up options for you. Some of them support tualitin. But mobo may need bios update.

Actually I just did some additional testing :

WS440BX Intel (Gateway) motherboard with P14 Bios

  • 550 SL3FJ Katmai 2.0 v
  • 600 SL3H6 Coppermine 1.65v
  • 600 SL43E Coppermine 1.65v
  • 600 SL44Y Coppermine 1.65v
  • 700 SL3S9 Coppermine 1.65v
  • 700 SL3XM Coppermine 1.65v (working now)
  • 800 SL4BY Coppermine 1.7v

***All booting into Bios***

I'm going to correct my previous post as I got the 700 SL3XM working. Its odd with the OEM intel boards some times a processor wont boot until I put a known working one in and then try again, I have had this happen quite a bit.

Its my bad I didnt do that last night in testing.... sorry....

I wonder what voltage the board provides. Looking at the VRM spec, it might be providing 2.05v to 1.65 chips:

Wow, that is seriously so helpful, thanks so much for posting that!

Is this the bios you are referring to as P14? http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=1517

I believe so it that seems to match the bios string that is on my motherboard when I got it.

BTW the 600 SL44Y Coppermine 1.65v didnt boot the 1st time either just like the 700 SL3XM Coppermine 1.65v until I booted off the 550 then shut the machine down and swapped cpus did it boot.... weirdness.

That's a great CPU, BTW. I remember back in the day people on some forums getting theirs to 1.33GHz. Obviously, treat yours lake a baby because they don't make them anymore, but cD0 stepping is very nice.
