Hey vogoners I am looking for a certain answer on a history matter. What was the first motherboard with PCIe? It isn't on google apparently. Was it good or bad compatibility-wise? Assuming the release date it could have been tested with a Radeon X800 or GeForce PCX 5/6 editions.
We are probably looking at late 2004. We also know that among the first successful chipsets were Intel 915 and Via K8T890 so it would likely be LGA775 or s939.

There is this Tom's hardware thread mentioning Asus K8S-MX and MSI RS480M2 in 2004. Neither of them are Via or Intel based. Considering SiS 760GX is not a PCIe chipset I really doubt it counts at all.

Ideas?

If I'm not mistaken I think Intel's first consumer PCIe chipset was the Intel 9x5P.
And I think AMD and nVidia were behind in that regard.
The ASUS P4GD1 wasn't first to market with it I'm pretty sure, but its the MB I ended up getting back in the day.
Still working great!
Also that would put it at early/mid 2004 (?).

Yes Intel 915P & 915G was listed as first PCIe silicon in Sept. 2003. If you search for first PCIe chipsets you can get an idea with this https://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp … 347268&seqNum=6
Those would all be PCIe v1.0 or 1.0A the earliest version....

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

ASUS P4GD1

It's a decent board and I'd probably take that as an answer. There are some 2004 previews found online.
There is also this news article from sept., 2004 covering Chaintech V915P as a "first" board from the vendor to utilize the chipset.

Intel probably launch their 915/925 motherboard before the rest of the market or even only for OEMs.

I have found this new in IXBT Labs
http://ixbtlabs.com/news.html?02/68/50

And the oldest reviews I have found is from Hexus.net for the S775 and the Asus's motherboards:

Odd 98se was still relevant in 2003, you would think drivers would exist

915 and ICH6 are officially supported in Win98 drivers.
