Some Asus mainboards (Commando/Striker) have a LCD display included in the ATX backplate displaying startup information. There's also the ROG LCD Poster out there which can be connected to some Asus mainboards for the same purpose. All of these tend to stop working properly after a while. Since I've got two Asus Commando mainboards with faulty LCD display I searched for a solution and found this guide:

Based on this guide I repaired both LCD displays and want to share my experience with the community, now.

1. Display is not functional:

2. Bend tin hooks open which hold the tin housing:

3. Remove tin housing from display:

4. Heat up the position where the ribbon cable is connected to the PCB in order to melt the glue. I used a hot air SMD soldering station regulated to 200 °C. Slide with the tip of a small screwdriver over the heated up ribbon cable pressing it gently onto the PCB. Move from one end of the ribbon cable to the other heating+pressing:

5. Connect the dismantled display to the mainboard. Switch on the mainboard amd check that all segments work properly. Repeat step 4 if some segments look weak or are missing:

6. Bring everything back in position. Make final check of display on mainboard:
