I've read all about the issues with this drive. I managed to get one for a couple bucks and wanted to learn how it worked (and see if it actually worked). It spins up just fine (boy is it loud). I believed something was mechanically wrong with the stepper motor as I didn't hear the actuator move. I confirmed the controller card works with a different drive. So I took the top off the motor and and saw what was broken (see photos). I'm curious as to what exactly is broken and how this motor works. The posted photos show the broken glass that was in the motor.

That looks a bit like a resistive layer on a glass substrate, likely used for position feedback, like in a simple servomotor

Just a guess though.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.
