hello, i have 2 sets of ram, i got them for free from a friend and am not quite sure what i should be using for "max speed/frames"

first the build specs for "this" retro xp in context:
xp sp3
sabertooth z77
i5-3570k
evga 670 4gb ( gtx 7900 for pandora tomorrow)

ram options are as follows

DDR3Patriot 2x2gb 7-7-7-20 @ 1600mhz (pvs34g1600llkn)
OR
DDR3Corsair dominator gt 2x2gb 9-9-9-24 @ 1866mhx (cmt4gx3m2a1866c9)

assuming xmp will be enabled with these, im not quite sure what best option is here without running benchmarks

Honestly you wont notice the difference between these sets, I would just go with the Dominator 1866 set and tighten the timings a little.

ok, ill give that a try. appreciate it.

^Seconded

Out of curiosity, why the Dominator ram?

Usually the higher speed memory is better binned IC's . .even if you clocked it back to 1600 you could run it with tighter timings than the patriot. That aside Corsair Dominator memory is usually pretty good quality stuff that will happily take a ton of abuse with timings, speed and voltages.

Just my experience honestly, have used Corsair Dominator sticks for years in my builds and its never been a bad experience, also use them in builds for my family PCs too due their reliability.

Thanks for explaining 😀

Personally I may actually have gone with the 1600MHz memory if only to keep the faster memory for a system that benefits more from it.
