VOGONS

I have been looking into buying this unit (https://www.ebay.de/itm/312586087561) to use for playing mid/late dos to early windows 98 games 1990-1999. Apart from some speed issues on older games and performance issues on some of the latter it seems ideal. It seems to have two pci and one isa slot. So I was thinking of a pci voodoo banshee and a small ISA sound card (if I can find one that fits or a pci sb live style card if I can't).

Anyone know anything about this machine? And how compatible the onboard audio and graphics are? I have not been able to find any drivers or any information on how usable the expansion slots even are.

Furthermore, the picture seems to show a floppy drive only but I have found similar looking systems with a slim laptop cd drive (so if I can add a cd rom that would be ideal).

Any suggestions on which cards to populate this with and how to make it as compatible as possible?

I have several other systems at my disposal to handle newer retro stuff so the performance for the later windows 98 games does not really matter that much, but I would just like the convenience of using this for all my retro needs and then use my modern desktop for pcem/dosbox/GOG to cover anything else.

TLDR version: anyone try the "Beetle" and is it good for retrogaming standalone and/or using the pci/isa slots?

There's a (messy) Reddit thread on the device:
https://www.reddit.com/r/retrobattlestations/ … 0_pos_computer/

Looks like it has two external slots, 1 ISA, 1 shared ISA or PCI. Integrated AC'97 doesn't have DOS support.

Default BIOS setting is to boot from ISA VGA only. So you probably need an ISA VGA card to change that setting to allow boot from PCI.

Here's Siemens' support page for the systems - but note that it contains info and driver for all Beetle systems including much newer ones than the P3-566 you're looking at.

Also: P3-566? Something fishy about that. There's no such CPU. This sounds like an i810 system with Celeron (not P3) 566...

But - and I'd do this myself if I had my glasses nearby and didn't have a splitting headache - most of your questions can be answered just looking at the pic of the motherboard and checking on the chips:

thanks for the response and a great thread you found there. I think I might just buy it and see if I can overcome the issues. Annoying about the ISA graphics card thing, that is something I don't have in my collection. But I guess part of the fun of this hobby is finding new old stuff to buy. At least it does seem like my initial plan of using a pci graphics card and and an ISA sound card will work then. I can't tell from the picture but there is probably not enough clearance for an awe64

I did manage to find some documentation on it and it supports a 566 celeron and 600+ PIII's so a mistake in the description in any case. There seem to be a number of similar systems out there so not sure exactly which model this is and if it will be able to support a cd rom drive

There's phyiscally no space for an internal CDRom drive in this chassis.

I'd focus on using Ethernet to get files to and from the machine.

Alongside ethernet, if you are willing to give up the floppy, you could fit an IDE compact flash bay in its place:

I can't quite work out if it has a second externally accessible bay behind that sliding front panel, but it looks like not; so you could have one or the other, but not both.

Realistically you'll want an ISA sound card if you are doing any DOS gaming, that leaves you one PCI slot for either a replacement primary display card, or a dedicated 3d card like a Voodoo or PowerVR, if the onboard video is not particularly desireable.

Kinda weird to see these machines being sought after. The headaches they have given me over the years of retail IT...
Most of them do indeed sport a Celeron 566, sometimes I have seen PIII 1GHz in these, although it may have been a later model, especially if they are i810 based.
