What is required for playing 1990s FPS games at SVGA (60 fps) ?
I have a Pentium 3 500 MHz from an IBM PC and it appears to include "S3 Trio 3D" chip onboard. Would this be possible to play 1990s FPS like Duke3D/Quake at 800x600 with 60 FPS?
If not, is there a recommended PCI video card I should look into? This motherboard doesn't have AGP so I'm limited to PCI.
Should run quite well at 800x600, yes. Not sure how it would fare if you want to go above that.
Stable 60fps? Duke Nukem 3D - yeah, probably possible, but not with S3 Trio3D. Quake - just nope.
Matrox Mystique/Millennium II was a popular 2D choice back then.

What about the combination 2D/3D cards like the Riva TNT(2) or Voodoo3? Are they better for 2D software rendering than the Matrox cards?
I remember getting good performance in Duke3d with a TNT2 card, though I haven't used mine in ages. It's a little newer than the Matrox cards mentioned.

Voodoo3 has excellent 2d image quality, and probably performance. By then Matrox was known for professional, multi-head cards that did quality color reproduction in a way that was of no interest to gamers, just graphic artists.
UniVBE helped with Duke3D performance for sure on S3 Virge DX2. Not sure about S3 Trio 3D or 60fps. 800x600 should be playable on PIII 500. Back in the day we used to play it on 640x480 on K6-2 350.
