Hi all!

Well, perhaps just for all the wrong reasons, I bought a not too expensive Slot 1 mainboard with the idea to add it a more powerfull CPU, maybe by using a slocket adapter...

The board is a QDI 5 Advance (VIA chipset), bundled with a a 550 MHz P III.
It should be -at the very least- an improvement over the 99% of the PCChips boards you find around here.

https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/qdi-p6 … -advance-5-133e

My undestanding is that (according to TRW) I could use any of these Slot 1 Coppermine processors:

Coppermine / 100 MHz FSB

Intel Pentium III 1000E
Intel Pentium III 850
Intel Pentium III 800E
Intel Pentium III 750
Intel Pentium III 700
Intel Pentium III 650
Intel Pentium III 600E

But... I'm not finding any Slot 1 PIII processor in the area, so I wonder if I could use one of these 'slocket' adapters along with a Socket 370 CPU:

These are the only ones available, and unfortunately the ads provide no better info nor images than what I'm posting here.
They are marked as P II, but perhaps that's only because of when they where released... I didn't take too much time to read on the matter because if they are useful I should get them before they sold.

And, by the way, whether with or without adapter, could I use a Celeron? Why are there no Coppermine Celerons listed as compatible?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Third adapter added.

PCChips / ECS Madex PII CPU Card ver 1.5
PPGA Celeron / 66 / auto voltage

PCChips / ECS Madex PII CPU Card ver 1.31
PPGA Celeron / 66 / auto voltage / no voltage clamp

Odd enough the 2nd one pic the name you have listed and picture dont match. The picture you put up appears to look like : AA370P 370CPU rev 1.0 FCPGA Coppermine / 133 / auto voltage / no voltage clamp

Hi, thank you for the reply!

I'd guess the seller probably used any random pic from the internet and has the PCChips.
What an irony would be to end up using a PCChips slocket after getting a QDI to escape from them... 🤦

Can'find much about those either, other than an Anandtech thread suggesting I could use 100 FSB, but you info suggests that they might be limited to 66MHz Celerons only, is that so?

Also: I just found a third one and added it to my post, picture is even worse, sorry....

I strongly do not recommend contacting a VIA693, third-rate manufacturer besides.
The chipset itself is very good, but the BIOS does not reveal it even by 50%. It may turn out that the PC133 memory shows performance like the Pentium 166.
If you are going to buy - do not take it, if you already have it - test the memory performance with the same SiSoft Sandra.

PS.
My first rig in 2001 is VT693+ 533MHz Celeron Mendocino.
Replacing Mendocino with 833 Coppermine at 133FSB gave nothing 🙁
I got a noticeable boost only after replacing it with an Intel D815EEA with the same processor.

The CPU in the third picture is a Coppermine something, not a PPGA (Mendocino) Celeron, for what it's worth.

Thanks!

I bought it last week or so, and it was good value for hardware of an era which I'm not particularly fond about and not willing to spend too much on.

Actually, I got it just to see if I could build something interesting (to me at least) around it and find some love for the age of slot 1, slot A systems.

Good to hear you experiences though. Thanks.

See Re: Trying to build a single DOS + Win98 1993-1999 gaming PC - advice is welcome on how to fix memory performance on 693a. You should be able to get close to performance of 694x.

The 3rd depicted slotket is Coppermine compatible for sure. I have at least one such slotket in my drawer. I have about 15 slotkets in total.

If you have soldering skills you could modify a PPGA slotket, otherwise stay away from them.

The "370cpu" definitely is Coppermine compatibel. I have one in my P3B-f at 980MHz (fsb 140).

The board should support it as well, as the slotket is dumb a.f.

Stuck at 10MHz...

Thank you all for the feedback, I bought it and it arrived a few days ago.

It looks nasty 🤣 ... I haven't got the time or nerve to test it yet.
I knew this would be a "fun" project from the moment I got that mainboard...

The seller mumbled something about it not working on a Pentium II, and added a P1 200 MMX in the box... Out of guilt I guess? God knows what and how he attempted to test.

The pictured P 3 was included in the sale and it's an 866 MHz 133 FSB unit. Not bad *if* it works.
Not compatible with my board but I have a 700/100 P3 and a 900 Celeron around (not sure of it's FSB) so that should get me started.

When the time comes I will most likely need some help to setup it up correctly.

I see a few badly scratched traces near the middle on the back side, therefore I doubt it will work.

If you mean around the middle of the socket backside, that's actually tape residue.
Either that or hot glue, as someone (either seller or someone else before @AngryByDefault) dumped a kilo worth of hot glue.

If you do have trouble, there are some good articles out there on how to modify slotkets to support faster CPUs.
Your mileage my vary - my experience is that some slotkets work well, some dont and you need to be careful that the voltage is controlled -- try it first on a cheap CPU you dont care about!

Hi all!
Yeah... it doesn't look good ... I will probably try to fix it, if it comes to that.

You've read my mind!
I had come across something about modding slockets but I didn't pay much attention yet.
You think getting one of the other two (or both) to mod them could work considering those slockets are not very good either? I think someone IDed them as being PCChips.

Those 2 P II adapters are, at least, cheaper than the one I've got, I would be paying more in shipping than the actual adapters, but they are the only ones around here.

OTOH maybe I should buy new ones from Aliexpress?? (Amazon or Ebay are not an option due to their shipping costs)

It doesn't look like I will find a slot 1 P III above 800 MHz around here, otherwise I would go that route.

You're right, I didn't notice them. Nothing unfixable though, and it may only be the lacquer that's gone at that - a multimeter shall tell.
