Can you tell me anything about this chipset, wikipedia knows barely anything. I am planning to build Pentium Pro system around it, is it a good choice or better suited for P2? Late pro or early P2, well that is the question... 😀

The chipset is adequate for Pentium Pro and early Pentium II CPUs. It only officially supports up to 66 MHz FSB and doesn't support SDRAM, UDMA nor AGP.

Frankly it ain't all that great. The pentium pro was a bit held back by it. Put a PPro on a BX board and you really see it sing

At 66 MHz, is the LX so bad against the BX?

If apples to apples, meaning BX running at 66mhz too with a comparible CPU. Probably not. Otherwise its enough to make a impact.

No the LX was a significant improvement over the FX

No, the 440LX has nearly all the features that the 440BX has except support for 100 MHz FSB.

For a Pentium Pro there isnt much to choose from. Intel 440FX would be the most common one if you dont go into server hardware.

The limitations is something you have to live with and try to overcome. SCSI is a pretty nice upgrade from IDE in these systems 😀

Consider the age of the stuff...

No, i440FX doesn't have AGP, UDMA or SDRAM because it's a 1995 chipset and none of those things existed in 1995. It's contemporary with the i430FX and basically shares the same feature set, just with a GTL FSB and a northbridge that can address more RAM.

Want 1997 features? Get an i440LX. With a P2.
